ChatGPT is an underrated tool for learning a skill.

With a smart technique, you can reduce your learning curve.

I took these principles from Scott Young, who, through self-education, completed MIT's four-year computer science course in 1 year.

Here are 5 steps to learn any skill faster with ChatGPT:

1. Rule of 10

Invest at least 10% of your time in planning.

You want to create a loose roadmap. It will include the source of your learning, mentors to whom you'll listen, and the length of your learning.

All of which can be easily done by ChatGPT in a fraction of a second.

Prompt:

I want to learn (put skill). I have (put your current level of expertise).

Now I want you to give me 3 things:

• 3 best sources to learn (put skill) - books, courses or blogs

• Average time I should spend on learning

• 3 experts in the field

2. Concept, Facts and Procedures

Now, once you start learning, create 3 lists:

• Concept - fundamentals of the skill you need to understand

• Facts - things you need to remember about the skill

• Procedure - actionable steps to practice

If you've difficulty finding out the nature of anything, ask ChatGPT.

Prompt:

Give me these 3 things of (put skill):

• Concept - fundamentals of the skill you need to understand

• Facts - things you need to remember about the skill

• Procedure - actionable steps to practice

3. Directness

Jumping into action is the single best way to learn faster.

Imagine a situation where you need the skill to apply your learning. Most people stay in the theory part for too long, and then their learning doesn't get transferred to action.

Prompt:

I'm learning( put skill).

I need to get more into action than theory. Please give me the exercise I can do to practice (sub-skill).

4. Drill

Every skill is a combination of sub-skills.

Whenever you reach a bottleneck, you're lagging behind one sub-skill. Figuring out which skill set you're missing is much more difficult than improving on it.

Create a drill and keep checking whether you're improving or not.

Prompt:

I'm struggling to get better at (put sub-skill).

I want you to give me 3 drills and daily exercises that I can practice to improve on.

5. Feedback

Without feedback, you'll repeat the same mistakes.

You need a mentor or a course that helps you figure out one sub-skill you're missing out on. And then how to improve it.

ChatGPT can be helpful, but it can sometimes be way off the radar.

6. Intuition

Best students have a deeper understanding.

They get big components and small components at the same time.

The best method is to practice the Feynman technique:

• Identify the topic

• Teach it to a child

• Identify knowledge gaps

• Simplify

It keeps things simple and crisp.

Prompt:

I want you to act like an 8-year-old without any understanding of (put skill). In the next two paragraphs, I'll explain the topic to you. You need to identify knowledge gaps and ask questions.
